Our University's Policy on BYOD
Currently, in Japan, education up to high school is promoting education that utilizes ICT (Information and Communication Technology) by having each student learn using one device. The use of ICT is also progressing in society, and when university students look for jobs, they are being asked to do activities that assume the use of ICT, such as online interviews.
Therefore, our university is developing education and classes that utilize ICT under the premise of BYOD (Bring Your Own Device), so that all students who enroll will graduate fully equipped with the skills to utilize ICT and be able to play an even more active role in the society of the future.Through four years of study at our university using BYOD, we hope that students will gain experience in setting up and managing their own devices, actually using online tools and services, and graduate with the skills to utilize ICT.
At our university, we require students to bring a laptop with them when they come to school, and we are developing an environment where students can study "anytime, anywhere" by using digital learning materials and conducting classes using media such as quizzes and assignments on laptops. We hope that students will continue to learn according to their own circumstances while using laptops, and thereby develop the ability to learn independently. We believe that the ability to learn independently is a very important skill for living a fulfilling life in the rapidly changing society of the future, where new things are constantly being created.
Therefore, we ask that you understand our educational policy and that all prospective students prepare their own personal laptops.

Q&A
Q&A
Use at universities
- Why has a laptop become a must-have?
 - In response to the fact that the use of ICT (information and communication technology) is becoming a given in society, Osaka Sangyo University University has decided to make laptops mandatory from 2025 and to develop education and classes that utilize ICT under the premise of BYOD, so that students who enroll will graduate with a sufficient understanding of how to use ICT and be able to play an even more active role in the society of the future. In addition, we will develop an environment where students can study "anytime, anywhere" using laptops, and we hope that students will acquire the ability to study independently by continuing to study according to their own circumstances.
 - Do I have to prepare a laptop computer?
 - We expect you to prepare a laptop computer. At universities, classes are conducted on the assumption that students have a laptop computer, and job hunting activities, such as online interviews, are now expected to use ICT.
 - Do I have to bring my laptop with me every day?
 - We expect you to bring your laptop every day. In class, there will be more and more situations where you will need a laptop, such as using Word on your own device or viewing materials. One of the purposes of BYOD is to improve your skills by gaining experience in managing and using devices. Even if you are not required to use a laptop in class, we recommend that you actively use one within the scope of the instructor's approval.

About purchasing a computer
- Is there a recommended PC?
 - Regarding the university-recommended laptops, our business partner is currently preparing to sell a "limited plan for Osaka Sangyo University."
We will update this page as soon as it is ready. Thank you for your patience. - I already own a laptop with the same specifications as the one used by the faculty or department I am planning to enroll in. Do I need to purchase a new one?
 - No need to buy anything new, just use your existing laptop.
 - I already own a laptop that does not meet the specifications for the faculty or department I am planning to enroll in. Do I need to purchase a new one?
 - Unless you believe that the performance of your current laptop is significantly insufficient, there is no need to purchase a new one. Please use the laptop you already have first. Please consider purchasing a new one only after confirming the necessary performance while taking classes. However, please be sure to prepare a laptop that meets the recommended specifications, as there is a high possibility that the apps used in classes at the Faculty of Architecture and Environmental Design will not work.
*Support for the Windows 10, Windows 8.1, and Windows 7 operating systems has ended, so they are no longer available. - Can I use an ARM version Windows PC (models equipped with Snapdragon X series, etc.)?
 - If you are purchasing a new computer, we recommend that you purchase the "x86" version of Windows.
Because the ARM version of Windows is a special OS for tablets and is different from the regular Windows OS, it may cause disruptions to classes, such as some applications not working properly or drivers for external devices (USB-connected devices, etc.) not being provided.
?[For students of the Faculty of Architecture and Environmental Design] Please prepare a PC that meets the specifications of your faculty.
?[For other faculties] If you currently own a laptop with ARM version of Windows, please first use your existing laptop and take classes to see if you need the performance before considering purchasing a new one. - Can I use a Windows PC (S mode)?
 - If you are purchasing a new computer, we recommend that you purchase the "x86" version of Windows.
Windows PC (S mode) has some usage restrictions, such as not being able to install apps other than those from the Microsoft Store and only being able to use the Edge browser.
?[For students of the Faculty of Architecture and Environmental Design] Please prepare a PC that meets the specifications of your faculty.
?[For students of other faculties] If you currently own a laptop that is a Windows PC (S mode), please first use the laptop you already have while taking classes to see if you need the performance before considering purchasing a new one. - I don't have a laptop for personal use and it is financially difficult for me to purchase one. What should I do?
 - If you have a smartphone or tablet, please install Microsoft applications (Word, Excel, etc.) on it as a temporary substitute for a laptop. If you have a shared laptop at home, please use it as much as possible.
 - Can I use a tablet? Do I have to buy a laptop?
 - We expect you to bring your own laptop. In class, you will need to use a laptop more and more, such as using Word on your own device and viewing documents. In addition, regardless of the type of job or industry, working adults are required to have computer skills. Our university expects you to acquire computer skills and then use a tablet as a temporary substitute for a laptop when you are considering purchasing a laptop or when your laptop breaks down. Please consult with the instructor of the class, as there is a high possibility that the apps used in classes at the Faculty of Architecture and Environmental Design will not work.
 - When purchasing a computer at a mass retailer, should I purchase one with Office or without Office?
 - While you are a student, you can use Office for free, so it is not a problem if you do not have Office.
 - I want to purchase a non-Windows PC (Mac, Chromebook, etc.)
 - A Windows PC is recommended.
*Please be sure to prepare a Windows PC, as there is a high possibility that apps used in classes at the Faculty of Architecture and Environmental Design may not work.
In the class, the operation of a Windows PC will be explained as the basis. If you do not know how to operate a Windows PC on a Mac, it may be difficult. Please note that if you have any questions or problems with a Mac, you will need to solve them yourself. If you are not familiar with operating a Mac, we recommend using a Windows PC.
*Please note that Office365 (Mac version) does not include Access.
*The desktop version of Office 365 cannot be installed on Chromebooks, so only the web app version is available. Please note that some functions may not be available compared to the desktop version. - I want to buy a tablet PC.
 - Please refer to the recommended specifications and use the device as appropriate. However, we recommend that you wear a keyboard in order to get used to typing on a keyboard.
